Mall Grab Shares His Soft Side with Love Reigns
Some of us have been feeling like we’re looking at life through a keyhole, witnessing a film of dust grow thicker over our eyes, day after day. Some of us, but not Mall Grab, baby. Mall Grab has been living his best life! The guy just can’t stop. He’s doing skateboard tricks, hanging out with friends, petting doggos…
Exhibit A: His brilliant new video has all the charm of a vintage home movie, where the film grain gives this added nostalgia, this weird depth that makes you think: “This looks old, but it’s a video of now, so maybe everything that is old now was once young and new.” And the mor you think about it, the more it gives you the willies.
That same “future nostalgia” has been present in his music, from the lo-fi aesthetic of his early tracks to the saturated techno he has been releasing lately. His latest opus, Love Reigns, is another about-face, an exploration of euphoric piano house without an ounce of irony. It doesn’t fall too far from Yes I Need My Generator, his 2020 collab with Turnstile.
It’s a strange contrasting piece of art that makes me feel like I now know Mall “Jordon Alexander” Grab a little better the more I obsessively listen to it day and night.
It doesn’t look like nightlife will resume anytime soon in my neck of the woods, but the Love Reigns visual - directed by Liam Oz - gives me this little zest of hope, just what I need to stay in good spirits and stay put until I get to dance to sweet jams like this again with my friends and/or strangers.
The single Love Reigns is out now via Mall Grab’s own imprint Looking For Trouble.
