This Is Why I Blog (and Why You Should Too)

I started writing for this blog 2 years ago today...

I’m a music producer, that’s how I make a living. My blog isn’t a source of income, and in fact, I actually pay a couple of hundred of dollars a year to keep the metaphorical lights on. So, you might wonder why I blog a few times a week, why I spend a couple of hours on each post, from research to layout. (If you do not wonder that - spoileroo - I'm telling you anyway.)

Well, as I got a little more… mature (i.e. older), I noticed that a lot of people who are very aware of the indie culture in their early 20s slowly but surely lose interest through the years. I swore to myself I would never become someone who says “It was better in my day”. I firmly believe there never has been as much good art and culture produced as there is right now, and, frankly, I wanted something that would force me to keep up.

In a sense, maintaining a public blog is my way to stay accountable.

I don’t have a choice, I have to check out the music that’s coming out in order to blog. I’m not saying I manage to listen to everything that’s getting released - which would be humanly impossible in 2020 - but I try my best! If I skip a month, I know probably no one will notice, but I will, and so far, that’s been enough to keep me going.

As long as I keep this blog going, I have to listen to music, and then I have to write about it, and I can’t be too precious about what I write because the next self-imposed deadline is just around the corner. Blogging forces me to stop overthinking and start doing. Writing forces me to form an opinion and get to know myself. It’s the worst, but like, in a great way, y’know?

Another reason I blog is for all the cool people I continue to meet while I do it. I’ve had the chance to interview great artists I admire, ask them questions I actually give a shit about. I’ve also connected with some really cool PR people from around the world who send me fun projects every week.

In the past 2 years, I haven’t spent a single penny in promotion, yet, every month the blog is read by anywhere from a few hundreds to a few thousands unique visitors - probably hipsters like myself, I have to imagine - and I can’t even wrap my head around that. I’m just so grateful for you guys, whoever you are.

There are so many people releasing great art right now, and so few people who can afford the time to talk about it. As a deadbeat musician, I’m lucky enough to have some free time on my hand. I’m happy to continue to write and meet talented people, that’s what life’s for. If you have time to write too, I recommend it. It’s dorky stuff, but it’s its own reward and a half.

In the years to come, I hope to continue to post semi-regularly, and who knows, maybe produce a podcast or something - although my Quebecois accent is a very real problem I’m still working on and the world just isn’t ready for the levels of broken my spoken English brings to the table.

Once the quarantine is lifted and shows resume in my area, I hope to be able to bring you more pictures and show reviews and whatnot. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get someone to write a guest post for the blog once in a while. This has been fun and all, but blogging is really cutting right into my slacking off routine. Jeeeeeez...

So, here’s to at least 2 more years of sub-par content and half-baked reviews. If you’re reading this, you’re great. I love you.

Speak to you guys soon.
