PREMIERE: Basic Instinct /// Morning Groove
It’s a new year, babe. Everything is finally alright with the world (jk) and while suckers are making resolutions and hitting the gym, the real cool people prefer to hit… the club. Basic Instinct is definitely one of those cool people, as his track Morning Groove can attest. The breathy, sweaty ambiance of these underground parties and stellar clubs I’ve missed so much is exquisitely encapsulated in the pulsating single, an excerpt from BI’s upcoming album Into The Night. And yeah, that’s right, I said “exquisitely”. Daddy got himself a word-of-the-day calendar for x-mas and it’s already paying off! Anyways, Basic Instinct has been a pillar of Berlin’s tech house scene for over a decade now, and the founder of the streetwear collective Vertere. For all these reasons, we’re really proud to be premiering Morning Groove today. We also asked him a few questions, you know the drill.
We're very proud to be premiering Morning Groove today. Can you tell us a little bit about this track? What was your inspiration for this one?
Hello, Happy New Year to you all, and thanks a lot for the premiere! I love hypnotic and atmospheric tracks. With “Morning Groove” I wanted to catch a hypnotic groove. Something to lose your sense of time to. The track is ideal for the morning hours of a party 😊.
Your musical project is shrouded in mystery. What can you tell us about the background of the project Basic Instinct?
I’ve been making music for more than 15 years now. Basic Instinct is my latest project. The idea was to create a sexy and atmospheric sound. When I first started this project 3 years ago, my sound leaned a bit towards dark disco vibes – with energetic drums. For some time now, I’ve gone more into a dub-techno & dub-house direction – still sexy and atmospheric.
I'm curious to know more about the circumstances surrounding the creation of your new EP, Into the Night. What does it represent for you?
The idea of the EP was to produce tracks that represent different stages of a club night. The first track Into The Night is supposed to be a sexy start to a night out. Something to set an atmosphere in a club.
Energy is definitely a prime-time track. Powerful vibes, energetic vocals, and strong drums towards the end.
Morning Groove fits perfectly towards the end of the night. A hypnotic groove – something to lose yourself to.
You’re part of the Vertere crew. Are there ways in which your work as a musician intersects with your work in the fashion industry?
We founded Vertere Berlin 4 years ago – Streetwear from the heart of Berlin’s nightlife scene. We want to give Berlin’s vibrant techno scene a home in fashion. This year we did collabo lines with Jennifer Cardini, Disco Halal, and Duat Records. A lot of exciting collabs coming up for next year.
Your music finds a balance between vintage sonorities and a modern edge. I'm curious to know if there are production tools that have inspired you or helped you define your sound during the making of the album?
I got a lot of love for raw and very organic sound. I like to work with textures and noise pads to give a certain warmth and imperfection to my sound. In general, I really like when a track doesn’t sound perfectly digitalized. My productions method reflects that. I’m still using the same old tools as when I started 15 years ago. It’s maybe not always the easiest process but I get exactly what I’m aiming for.
Were there any musicians that inspired you while you were making the EP? Tell us what you've been listening to.
I’m a big fan of producers like VRIL, Ed Davenport and Silent Servant. Most currently I really like the sound of Aroma Pitch and Orion.
One of my biggest inspirational moments was to hear Donato Dozzy at Panorma Bar a few years ago – an incredible vibe.
What's coming up for Basic Instinct?
After this EP on SOUS, we will launch our music label for Vertere Berlin in February. The first record will be by me, with two very exciting remixes.
Into The Night is out on 7th Jan. You can pre-order it now via Beatport.
