PLAYLIST : Bedroom Pop
I guess you could call bedroom pop an Internet music genre. In truth, it’s an evolution of the indie pop / D.I.Y. music movement that was started when consumer-grade music gear became widely accessible (and affordable) at the turn of the 21st century.
It is now easier than ever to produce and distribute your music, which, if you have something to express artistically, is quite a chance. While a lot of people declare rock dead, bedroom pop songwriters continue to use electric guitars along with a mix of acoustic and virtual instruments to find new ways to transpose the agony and the ecstasy that of all of us sensitive humans.
Bedroom Pop incorporates all kinds of cultural references to brew it’s lo-fi aesthetics. While a lot of music is made in bedroom studio nowadays (and not just the chill kind), I take the term bedroom pop more as a declaration of independence. Everyone has a bedroom and a laptop, and basically, as long as you have access to a power outlet, you can make the music you want.
It’s also a little confessional. As a pop artist, you’d be more inclined to talk about your secrets and your feelings when you’re in a familiar place, away from the noise of the world, inches away from the bed where you do most of your dreaming.
I’ve compiled a few of my bedroom pop tracks of recent years here. Let me know if I forgot anyone!
