INTERVIEW : Damian Rausch

Slick, moody, uplifting… Damian Rausch’s music is simply amazing. The prolific German producer has released countless memorable tracks, from his genre-bending hit Something New, to his irresistible new single, the groovy All Right.

I discovered Damian’s music on Spotify, earlier this year. Completely won over by his dance floor party-starters, I wanted to know a little more about him and his creative process. Graciously, he answered a few questions for me.

Where are you from?

I grew up in a small university town near Frankfurt. The city is called Giessen. I started playing guitar when I was 8 years old. My mother is a piano teacher and my father is a professional musician. He makes abstract music with glass objects. There is a very lively scene here. There are many collectives who make their own parties. Everyone knows everyone, which is good and familiar.

What was the first track you heard that made you feel like making the music you're producing now?

I was a big fan of Dusky in my early twenties. You might notice the influence sometimes. KiNK is one of the biggest for me. Another stirring track for me was DJ Koze’s Mariposa.

You’re insanely creative. Your Spotify profile lists 4 EPs for 2019 alone. How do you manage to create so much?

I love to make music. It’s has a lot of benefits for me. Besides, I have to invest time in what really counts.

What was the best purchase you’ve made related to your art?

The best purchase was probably Native Instruments’ keyboard, with its countless possibilities. But also my acoustic guitar or my vinyls are very important to me.

What does success look like for you?

I just want to continue doing what I enjoy: house music.

Which artists truly inspire you at the moment?

I'm a big fan of Black Loops. His sound hits the nerve of our time and has definitely inspired me. But also Bellaire or Demuja are very striking artists with a lot of standing.

The favorite video you’ve seen on YouTube lately?

The video I watched the most - and the one that touched me the most - was Mac Miller's Self Care video. I loved him. He has accompanied all through high school.

What’s coming up for Damian Rausch in the future?

I’m launching my debut Between EP on November 22nd, on the Belgian label Gents and Dandy’s. The title track was released on November 6th. I’m also looking for a label, because i have some new tunes.
