INTERVIEW : Sonn
Truly transcendent, Sonn’s music takes hints from R&B, downtempo and lo-fi hip hop to compose a sonic universe unlike any other. It feels like the producer is at a pivotal point of his career, and his success comes with its share of risk. Yet, since Sonn’s 2018’s single Choke, everything he touches turns to gold, from his recent work with vocalists such as Ayelle and EYUKALIPTUS, to his work as a live artist.
All this doesn’t seem to affect Jed, the man behind Sonn. Friendly and down-to-earth, he answered our questions with humor and enthusiasm. He spoke to us about his influences, his friends and the shape of Sonn to come.
What was the first track you heard that made you feel like making the music you're producing now?
Man, this is a real hard question, I think probably Marilyn by Mount Kimbie. Once I heard that song I was obsessed with that kind of sound.
Where are you living currently? How is this place (or places) influencing you?
I live in London. It's cool to be here because there is such a diverse culture with music, it's really easy to find creatives that you can easily gel with and I think meeting people is the way i’ve been influenced the most.
You’ve worked with Ayelle and EYUKALIPTUS recently. How did these collabs come about?
Both songs have just been over the internet, I just messaged them on soundcloud to see if they were down to work on something together haha. I am a big fan of both their sounds and wanted to incorporate that with my sound to create something unique. I prefer writing songs with vocals as I think they just have a little more connection to an audience.
I believe you started playing live sets earlier this year. How has this experience been? (How does it compare to DJing? Did it influence the way you produce music?)
It's been fun playing live, my first show went really well, but there are still parts I want to iron out a little more. Dj-ing is also fun, but I feel that I have to be in the right place to do it. I think after my first performance i've kinda been making more upbeat dance-y songs, most of my music is really downtempo haha.
I’ve discovered you through your breakthrough hit Choke. Can you talk a little bit about the circumstances surrounding the creation of that track? Did you expect it would reach so many people while you were making it?
I had just moved to london when I made Choke. It was a new city and a new experience for me and I didn’t really know where I was going with what kind of music I wanted to make. Making it I had know idea it would be this big, its crazy really and I can’t thank everyone thats been supporting me enough.
I bet your music means a lot to a lot of people. What’s your funniest (or weirdest) encounter with a fan so far?
haha I've had people tell me they listen to my music when they're in the bedroom if you know what I mean haha, I always find that funny/strange.
Your playlist a soundtrack to life contains a handful of great indie pop songs. What do these tracks mean to you?
These are just songs i’m really feeling at the moment. i’m super lucky that at least 80% of those people in the playlist are my friends!
What’s coming up for Sonn in 2020?
I got an EP on the way! A lot more of me singing and these songs are some of my best works yet in my opinion!
